Workers at the Irish National Lottery were in for a surprise when a Euromillions winner walked in, accompanied by his two best friends, to collect his prize. The winner, who went to hilarious lengths to protect his identity, won €195,998 in the Irish Lotto for the Euromillions draw which took place on 7 October. The young man from Clare wanted to share his delight with two of his closest friends, but also wanted his identity to remain anonymous. This stunt sparked an idea in the imagination of the National Lottery and want to implement the idea of using emoji masks for those who do not want their names revealed.

"I asked the two lads to come with me to Dublin today but I didn’t tell where we were going," said the unknown Irish Lotto winner. "I could have come on my own but I wanted to share the experience with my two best friends. I’m going to enjoy the win over the next couple of days but first, I have plans to pay off my mortgage and we will see what is left after that."  

The Irish lotto has, in its time, provided us with numerous memorable stories like this. For other winners, the joys earned from winning the lottery are a lot more simple. Kevin Geoghegan, 46, retired from his work after 26 years. He expressed his glee at never having to work night shifts again.

“You would have to work from 12 to eight in the morning every third week or so, I never liked that,” he said. I didn’t like the evening shifts either as I like playing soccer and you’d miss out on that. I wanted to say goodbye to them [his work colleagues],” he continued. “Especially my old shift fellas. I would be coming in to work today if this didn’t happen, but that’s the way it goes."

“I always had a feeling I would win the Lotto. The lads are delighted for me. I am an ordinary Joe, I have the craic and have the pint. It is emotional for me. The factory have always looked after me, I’ve been here over 20 years. I met loads of friends and I will never forget them.”
