How To Stay Grounded After Winning The Lottery | PLUS: Lottery Round-Up

Many of us can only access our most basic imaginative recourses when it comes to trying to fancy a life of a millionaire. Even when we do try to imagine the trappings of success, we tend to only fantasise about the most exciting aspects of living in the fast lane. We think of wild parties, fast cars and tying up loose...ends. What we don't often think about are the challenges that nearly every lottery winner faces when coming into sudden riches. While some give into temptation all too easily, there are some who kept their heads above water and even displayed the kinder side of people.  There is one such example who not only won the Euro Lotto, but also came out the other side with the majority of her riches still in tact.

National Lottery winner, Annette Dawson is one of many know what it's really like to try to evade the temptations of success. The 41-year-old, who won €1 million in the Euromillions raffle in 2015, knew that her life would never be the same again. With a strong head on her shoulders, the mother of two resisted any urges to celebrate too heavily. In fact, aside from the odd holiday, she spent a tenth of her winnings on selfless acts. She immediately started settling the debts of those closest to her and, as she put it, "making everybody comfortable."

She and her husband, Andrew, decided together that they would set aside £100,000 for the needs of others. Annette was in a reflective mood when interviewed. “Money doesn’t make anybody happy. It just makes life easier," she said.

“I was happy before and I’m just as happy now. It’s not made me any different. It’s made things easier - a lot easier. Before the money, we were struggling. We were able to pay off all our debts, it’s not like we’re always trying to find the next little bit of money to do something. My husband and I are able to spend more time together and go away on holidays. We’ve bought my daughters a house each so they’re set up. It’s made us more comfortable.”

It is a rather refreshing change to hear stories of people who have managed to use their once in a lifetime gift responsibly.
