Lottery Winners Expose Their Dark Side

When people think of lottery stories they have heard, the theme the topic inevitably sways towards (after what they would do with their winnings) are usually tales of those who have lost all their winnings. It's a rather macabre way of thinking but we are all creatures who learn from one another's mistakes. It's just a part of basic evolution. So in the spirit of convincing ourselves that we are not subjected to the German idea of taking pleasure in someone's misfortune, "schadenfreude", let's take heed from the following stories of those who have won big but have ultimately fallen from grace in a series of poor decision making. We can only learn from their misfortunes.

Despite an unstoppable force of financial advisers lining up at the doors of those who have just won the lottery, none of these people thought it necessary to take any advice. Yes, it is true that there are sharks out there. However, with a clear mind and with putting your best foot forward from the onset, so many tears and feelings of woe can be avoided.

Lara and Robert Griffith

Those close to the Griffith family have indicated that even before the lottery success, the couple have had more than their fair share of marital issues. Lara and Robert came into a lovely $2.75 million windfall and although one would think that the newly acquired wealth would help fix a few of their problems, ironically the riches caused even more!

Both parties squandered away their riches. While Mr. Griffith purchased a high-end car, Mrs. Griffith splurged her cash on designer clothing. The couple bought a mansion, although that phase would not last terribly long. Lara accused her husband of infidelity and in a fit of rage, Robert sped off and the couple would never be the same. Today, Robert lives with his parents from whom he gets his allowance.

Lisa Arcand

In 2003, Lisa won $1 million in a jackpot and decided to spend the larger mass of that sum on investing in a seafood restaurant. Additionally, she purchased a house as well as a lovely vacation. So far so good, right? Sadly, Lisa did not invest much of her time in researching the seafood business ultimately bringing her restaurant down to its knees. Today, Lisa is struggling to stay afloat and her only "asset" left in her name is the house.

Willie Hurt

In 1991, Willie Hurt of Michigan won $3 million but opted for the annuity worth only $156,000 per year over twenty years. A smarter decision some might say if invested wisely. However, Willie literally burned through his money due to a crack addiction. His life became a little more desperate years later after having to deal with the stresses of a divorce. He is currently serving time after being found guilty of first-degree murder.
